Kemasan Art Studio or known as Sanggar Seni Kemasan is a non commercial and inclusive art club, that is open for all ages. Mainly working in preserving traditional and modern theater, Sanggar Seni Kemasan also provides training in dance, Karawitan (gamelan music), and fine arts. The studio also provides upskills programs in stage layout and property management.
Sanggar Seni Kemasan was founded by Bambang Sugiarto on 21 December 1976. At that time, the name was Sanggar Gidag Gidig. At the early days, this studio had to move from one place to another before they could have a rehearsal or training. In 1984, Gidag Gidig chose a small house as a permanent studio, which is now the studio for Sanggar Seni Kemasan. They started using the name of Sanggar Seni Kemasan in 2013, taken after the name of the local neighbourhood where the studio is located.
Sanggar Seni Kemasan aims at building and strengthening the character of the community through the arts. The activists in this studios are now not only artisans, but also intellectual figures such as doctors, engineers, lecturers, businessmen, and policemen. Bambang believes that cultural art can shape the strong character of anyone and make him a great person.
Sanggar Seni Kemasan has made various achievements through its products, one of which is Teater de’ Bocah, a theater group for children that won “Festival Nasional Teater Anak-anak: Dalang dan Wayang”, a national festival of children traditional ballet dancing held in 2015. Their performances were also aired aired in TVRI Yogyakarta. Sanggar Seni Kemasan has also often been nominated at FFI Nominations Best Children Actor, Best Director, Best Performance.
