Kirab Pusaka Keraton Surakarta Hadiningrat Palace Malam 1 Suro or Hijri New Year’s Eve which was held on Saturday (8/31/2019) night took place with a solemn ceremony. The commemoration marks the turn of the Hijri year. On the night of 1 Suro, a number of traditions and cultural events are usually held to celebrate this sacred evening. In the city of Surakarta there is a tradition of Kirab Kebo Bule. Some white kebo (white buffalo) paraded around the city. For Surakarta residents, they believe that the buffaloes are descendants of Kebo Bule Kiai Slamet who are considered sacred. The celebration of the Hijri new year as it is done with the Kirab tradition. This tradition is used as a means for contemplation and introspection of various things that have happened during this year. The designation of 1 Suro as Javanese new year was carried out since the time of Sultan Agung Hanyokrokusumo. The king who led Mataram in 1613-1645 got the title of Wali Radja Mataram from the scholars because he was instrumental in spreading Islamic teachings without erasing Javanese tradition. In 1633 AD or precisely in Java 1555, Sultan Agung held a large party or celebration. In the same party, Sultan Agung stated that the Javanese Year or Saka New Year was valid in the kingdom of Mataram. Not only that, the Sultan also set One Suro as a sign of the Javanese New Year. Next, Sultan Agung issued a decree. The decree states that replacing the sun-based Saka calendar with the moon-based Qamariah calendar. With this change, every year the Javanese number is continued and continues with the Saka year. On the 1 night Suro carnival held on Saturday night at Surakarta Palace (8/31/2019), it took place solemnly and was witnessed by many residents of Surakarta and outside the city of Surakarta with the theme of the event “Kirab Pusaka Keraton Surakarta Hadiningrat Palace” Mangayubagya Warsa Anyar on 1 Suro Wawu 1953 (Saturday 8/31/2019) and for the Kirab Route starting from Surakarta Hadiningrat Palace – to the north via Supit Urang – then to Pakoe Boewono street – Gate gladak north to Jend Sudirman street – turn east via Mayor Kusmanto street – turn south via Captain Mulyadi street – turn West through Veteran street – turn north via Yos Sudarso street – turn East via Brigadier Slamet Riyadi street – turn south via Pakoe Boewono street – returned to the Surakarta Hadiningrat Palace.
